Common Breastfeeding Problems

Breastfeeding is a skill that takes time for both mother and baby to perfect. The benefits of attending antenatal breastfeeding classes are very beneficial to help prepare both parents in the journey of establishing breastfeeding.

Some common breastfeeding problems are:

  • Engorgement (most common between day 3-5)
  • Mastitis
  • Low milk supply
  • Difficulty in latching on
  • Tongue tie
  • Thrush
  • Nipple discomfort
  • Positional issues

The most important thing is to get help and advice, beginning in the postnatal ward, and then at home from a breastfeeding specialist, public health nurse, GP, and of course from family and friends.

Breastfeeding support groups are invaluable for many reasons – ongoing support, advice, encouragement and a great way to get to know moms in your area, and have a chat and a cup of tea. A public health nurse or a Lactation Consultant is available at support groups for expert help.
